Overall, the most highly rated wine shipper is molded pulp, which earned a 3.9 rating in 2013, followed closely by corrugated cardboard with a 3.8 rating (Chart 6 ). EPS received a 2.6 rating and plastic inserts a 2.2 rating.
Both molded pulp and corrugated cardboard gained slightly over 2011 while EPS and plastic inserts dropped. “We use pulp because it’s recyclable and it’s cheap and it works,” said Pete Hedges, winemaker and general manager at Hedges Family Estate in Washington, summing up the popularity of molded pulp.
